During Technical Inspection, a volunteer Baja SAE Alumni checks to see if your car abides by all requirements in the Baja SAE Rulebook. In Kansas, we had to make a few last minute changes to pass tech on our second attempt. Luckily, we completed the required brake test just before it closed, which allowed us to get right to the dynamic events the next day.
Overall Dynamic Score:
A combined score that includes all four dynamic events is tallied after dynamic day. In Kansas, Lehigh placed first and was awarded $1000 in prize money.
Sled Pull/Hill Climb:
In the Hill Climb event, each team attempts to climb a steep grade hill. A sled-pull is used to simulate a hill climb on flat ground. In Kansas, a sled pull event was used in place of the hill climb. Cars had to pull a variable weight sled that got harder to pull the further it moved.
The Acceleration event tests the time it takes to complete a 100ft straight from a standing start. Each team is allowed two attempts. Acceleration placement is used for staging in the endurance race.
In the Maneuverability Test, teams compete on a course that asses the car's handling ability. The courses usually feature tight turns, pylon maneuvers, inclines, ruts and bumps. Each team has two attempts to post their fastest time. Our driver Kenan Smith put down a great run in Kansas which resulted in a 7th place finish.
In this event, the suspension and traction of each car is assessed. The track usually consist of logs, jumps, uneven surfaces, and mud. As the second car to complete the course in Kansas, we were very excited about our car's dynamic abilities.
The Endurance Race is a four hour event that evaluates each vehicle's ability to continuously operate over rough terrain. In Kansas our steering rack bolt sheared during the final lap. We finished the lap with just one wheel steering. In Illinois, the bolt broke again on the last lap. Unfortunately we had to be towed off the track. Improvement of the steering system is a main goal for this year.
